Engine rebuild assessment: what to send and what a quote should cover

A useful engine rebuild enquiry starts with the vehicle and what happened. This guide helps you prepare the information and compare repair proposals before agreeing major work.

Start with the registration and running status

Send the registration, make/model, approximate mileage and engine details if known. Say whether the engine runs, cranks but will not start, or will not turn. Include where the vehicle is currently located. A model badge alone may not identify the fitted engine, especially after previous replacement work. If you already have an engine code or an invoice identifying the unit, send it with the enquiry. You do not need to dismantle anything to obtain it.

Describe the sequence rather than guessing the failed part

Tell us when the fault began and what happened immediately beforehand: a new noise, warning light, overheating, loss of power or a sudden stop. Explain whether there was recent servicing, timing work or another repair. A short written timeline is often more useful than describing every non-start as a blown engine. Share an existing fault-code report or previous garage findings if available, including what was actually tested. Distinguish an observed result from a suggested cause.

Agree the initial inspection and authorisation

An enquiry is the starting point for assessment, not confirmation that a full rebuild is required. Ask what the initial inspection includes, whether strip-down is needed and what costs must be authorised before work begins. If parts of the engine are inaccessible without removal, the final damage assessment may require more work than an external check. Discuss the next decision point and how findings will be communicated. Do not assume that a preliminary estimate covers every internal component before inspection.

Compare the scope of two quotes

Compare the written inclusions rather than the headline price alone. Ask whether the proposal includes removal and refitting, agreed internal parts, required machining, fluids, associated damaged components and checks before handover. Establish which items remain subject to inspection and whether the quoted total includes any applicable tax. A timing repair, a bottom-end repair and a complete strip-down rebuild are different jobs. Ask what happens if additional damage is found and obtain agreement before extra work proceeds.

Check the rebuild terms and timescale

Quick Solution Vehicles LTD's standard engine-rebuild warranty is 6 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. The written terms for your particular job confirm what is covered and any variation. Typical turnaround is 1–3 weeks depending on parts availability and internal damage. Discuss the written terms for your agreed work and any required follow-up maintenance at handover. Parts availability, machining requirements and additional inspection findings affect scheduling; a typical timeframe is not a guaranteed collection date. Ask for updates before making transport or work commitments that depend on completion.

Plan delivery before arranging recovery

For a non-runner, contact the workshop before arranging vehicle delivery. Recovery for suitable major engine work can be discussed at customer cost. Explain access restrictions, whether the vehicle rolls and its current location so arrangements can be considered. Do not repeatedly start a distressed engine to record its noise or demonstrate a warning. If a serious oil warning, heavy knocking or overheating occurs, stop safely and arrange advice rather than continuing the journey.

Send one clear enquiry

WhatsApp your name, registration, make/model, mileage, running status and a short fault timeline. Add an existing report or useful photographs where available. You can also email info@quickvs.com or call 07522 179040. The workshop is at 56a Stratford Street North, Sparkbrook, Birmingham, B11 1BP, United Kingdom, open Monday–Saturday 10:00–18:00 and closed Sundays. Bring the information you already have; further assessment can then be discussed without inventing a diagnosis.
