Engine Diagnostics in Birmingham
Find the cause before agreeing a repair. Diagnostics £50
Good repair work starts with the right diagnosis. We investigate warning lights, limp mode, poor running, smoke, overheating and no-start faults before parts are fitted or major labour begins.

Fault finding for warning lights, limp mode, smoke, no-start and poor running.
Engine diagnostics in Birmingham for warning lights, limp mode, misfires, smoke, no-start issues and serious mechanical faults.
- Fault code and live data checks
- Mechanical checks where needed
- Clear findings before repair
Warning lights, live data and mechanical evidence
A fault code records a condition detected by a control unit; it does not automatically identify the failed part. A misfire may involve ignition, fuelling, air leaks or compression. A boost code can come from a hose, actuator, sensor or turbo fault. We consider stored codes, operating conditions and live data alongside the reported symptoms. The right next check is selected from that evidence. Clearing a warning light without investigating the cause is unlikely to resolve a fault that returns under the same conditions.
Non-start, knocking and oil-pressure warnings
For a non-start, it matters whether the engine cranks normally, turns unusually quickly, clicks or will not turn. Battery supply and basic electrical checks may be relevant before investigating fuel delivery, synchronisation or compression. Heavy knocking or a red oil warning calls for a different approach: do not keep running the engine to demonstrate the noise. A mechanical oil-pressure test, oil/filter inspection or internal assessment may be needed. We discuss what can safely be tested before risking further damage to an already distressed engine.
Bring useful information to the workshop
Send your registration, make and model, fuel type, mileage and a clear description of when the fault appears. Mention whether it happens cold, hot, at idle or under load, and include recent repair history. Warning-light photographs, existing fault-code reports and a short recording can help us prepare. Do not erase codes before the visit if they may contain useful history. Initial diagnosis may reveal the need for a second stage of testing; we explain that next step and agree the work before fitting parts or starting a major strip-down.
Use the findings to choose the repair
Confirmed timing-drive concerns can lead to timing-chain repair assessment. Where testing indicates internal damage, the engine rebuild process explains the further inspection and approval stages. A non-start or an exposed cylinder head in a photograph is not, on its own, proof that either repair is needed.

Workshop FAQs
Before you book
Does a diagnostic code prove a sensor is faulty?
No. Wiring, supply voltage, mechanical conditions and related components can produce the same code. The finding needs to be tested.
Can you diagnose a non-running car?
Yes. Explain how it stopped and whether it cranks. Contact us before arranging recovery so access and assessment can be planned.
Should I clear the codes before bringing it in?
Preferably keep the existing report and stored information. Codes and operating data can help trace an intermittent fault.
