Noise, vibration and pulling under braking
Brake squeal does not automatically mean the same repair as grinding, pedal pulsation or pulling to one side. We inspect pads, discs, calipers and associated mechanical components to establish what is worn or sticking. Vibration may also involve wheel, hub or suspension conditions, so the pattern of the fault matters. Tell us whether the noise starts cold, appears after a longer drive or changes when the brake pedal is applied. A red brake warning, loss of fluid or a very soft pedal needs prompt attention before the vehicle is driven.
Condition checks and the agreed repair
Pad thickness alone is not a complete brake assessment. Disc thickness, surface condition, corrosion, uneven wear and caliper movement can all affect braking. We consider sliders, boots, hoses and visible leaks where relevant, and check the parking-brake arrangement for the vehicle. Electronic parking brakes require the correct service procedure. Parts are selected for the registration and fitted specification, including any larger factory brake option. We explain whether pads, discs or another component needs replacement and identify associated faults that could damage newly fitted parts.
MOT items and safe collection
For an MOT failure, send the wording or a photograph of the test report so we can plan the inspection around the recorded defect. We rectify mechanical brake failures; your chosen test centre performs the retest. After repair, pedal feel, fluid level, leak checks and operation are assessed, with road testing where safe. New friction components may need bedding according to their instructions, and we explain any relevant handover advice. Contact the workshop before bringing a car with severely reduced braking, as recovery may be the safer route.
Brakes, suspension and MOT repair work
A braking noise, pulling or vibration needs inspection before assuming discs or pads alone are responsible. Our suspension and steering repairs page covers wishbones, control arms and related mechanical faults. If the vehicle has failed its MOT, send the report and read our MOT failure repair service for the repair-and-retest process.
Workshop FAQs
Before you book
Can you fit pads without changing discs?
Sometimes. Disc condition and thickness must be suitable; uneven or heavily worn discs can compromise the result.
Do you repair MOT brake failures?
Yes. Send the failure report first. We repair the mechanical fault, and the vehicle returns to a test centre for its MOT retest.
What if the car is unsafe to drive?
Do not drive it to demonstrate the fault. Call the workshop to discuss safe transport and assessment.
