Diagnosis before major work

Range Rover engine failures may relate to timing, lubrication, overheating, oil dilution, emissions-system issues or wear.

The fitted engine changes the diagnosis

Range Rover, Evoque, Velar and Range Rover Sport names cover several unrelated engine families. The 2.0 Ingenium diesel has a different timing and lubrication layout from an older 2.2 diesel, a 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 or an AJ133 supercharged V8. We identify the engine before selecting a repair scope. Bearing damage, cooling faults and timing symptoms need their own checks. On a non-runner, tell us whether it stopped suddenly, lost oil pressure, overheated or developed a noise gradually. For an SVR or another high-output model, use our performance rebuild page for the relevant engine coverage.

Choose an engine-specific assessment

For a confirmed 2.0 Ingenium engine, read our JLR Ingenium repair and rebuild information. Other Range Rover engines need their own procedure and parts identification. The assessment and quotation guide helps you compare what is included before approving removal or strip-down.

Diagnosis and timing repair options

When the extent of damage is unclear, start with engine diagnostics and mechanical fault finding before agreeing strip-down work. For chain-driven engines with viable repair options, read about timing chain assessment and replacement. A timing repair and a full rebuild require different scopes; the fitted engine and inspection findings determine the route.

Symptoms to report

What has changed?

  • Engine knock or rattle
  • Oil pressure warning
  • Smoke or loss of power
  • Timing chain or lubrication concern
  • Non-running vehicle

Describe when the symptom started, whether warning lights appeared and whether the engine still runs.

From assessment to handover

  1. Initial diagnosis
  2. Mechanical and oil checks
  3. Strip-down where rebuild is viable
  4. OEM-grade rebuild parts where suitable
  5. Warranty-backed handover

OEM-grade components are used where suitable, with parts choices confirmed before major work starts.

Standard warranty: 6 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first; exact cover confirmed in writing. Typical turnaround: 1-3 weeks depending on parts availability and damage extent.

Costs are confirmed after inspection and agreement of the repair scope. Recovery for suitable engine work can be arranged at customer cost.
