Timing chain replacement in Birmingham for rattles, chain stretch, guide failure and serious timing-related engine faults.
Cold-start rattle or timing-correlation faults?
Start-up rattle or timing warning lights need checking.
Cold-start rattle or cam/crank faults on chain-driven petrol engines?
A chain system includes the chain, guides, tensioners and sprockets; some engines also use variable camshaft timing units. Rattle on starting can have several causes, so we check the engine code, the circumstances of the noise and any timing-related fault codes. BMW N47 and N57 diesel chains are rear-mounted. JLR 2.0 Ingenium engines use timing chains, not wet timing belts; the diesel chain assembly is at the rear. Access, component choice and repair time vary by engine and vehicle installation.
If the chain has stretched, jumped or broken, fitting a new chain may not be the whole repair. We consider valve timing, compression and possible valve-to-piston contact before deciding whether a chain repair or engine rebuild is required. The agreed scope can include guides, tensioners, seals and specified single-use fasteners. A worn sprocket or damaged timing adjuster should not be ignored simply because it is outside a basic kit. Correct locking tools and the applicable manufacturer procedure are needed to set and verify the timing.
Hydraulic tensioners depend on an adequate oil supply. Oil level, oil specification, service history and evidence of contamination can therefore be relevant to a timing complaint. After the work, timing is verified and the engine is checked for leaks, abnormal noise and relevant fault codes. Any original lubrication concern needs to be addressed rather than hidden by new components. If there is a sudden rattle, loss of power, non-start or suspected chain breakage, stop using the vehicle and speak to us about safe assessment and recovery.
Read timing-chain repair or engine rebuild before comparing two very different quotations. Engine-specific information is available for BMW N47, BMW N57 and JLR Ingenium enquiries. If internal damage is still uncertain, mechanical fault finding is the starting point.

Workshop FAQs
Avoid continued use until it is assessed. A developing timing fault can lead to much more serious internal damage.
No. AJ200D and AJ200P are chain-driven engine families. Belt replacement services apply to different engine designs.
No. Strip-down and damage assessment determine whether the head, bottom end or complete engine can be repaired.
It depends on the engine code and year. Older EA111 TSI and EA888 TSI/TFSI engines use chains; newer EA211 TSI and most 1.6/2.0 TDI engines use cambelts for the camshaft drive. Model names alone are not enough. WhatsApp your reg and mileage so we can identify it, or read about cambelt replacement.
VW/Audi 1.2 & 1.4 TSI from £549. VW/Audi 1.8 & 2.0 TSI/TFSI from £795. BMW N47 2.0 diesel from £1,195. JLR Ingenium 2.0 diesel from £1,495. BMW N47 and JLR Ingenium chains sit at the back of the engine. The engine has to come out to reach the chain, which is why those jobs cost more.
